Tommy Wells via Facebook. After losing the Democratic primary election for mayor in April, many speculated that Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6)—whose Council seat expires after this year—would run for an At-Large Council seat. That’s not the case, as it turns out.
In a letter to Greater Greater Washington, Wells announced that he isn’t going to run for the At-Large seat, which is currently occupied by David Catania, who’s running for mayor instead of seeking reelection. “The Council needs an infusion of fresh leadership,” Wells writes, “and I need to apply my Council experience to new challenges.” Wells didn’t mention what those new challenges may be, but said that he’ll “explore the myriad other ways [he] can serve [the city],” while he “[gives] new candidates a chance to show what they can do.”
Among those new candidates is Elissa Silverman, who actually isn’t that new of a candidate. Silverman ran for an At-Large seat in the 2013 special election, just narrowly losing to Anita Bonds. “The rumor turned into reality today: Moments ago I filed paperwork to run again for D.C. Council,” Silverman writes in her blog. Silverman also writes that this campaign “will again center on integrity, accountability, and investment in D.C.” She also says that she won’t accept corporate contributions and talks about DCPS and education as one of her primary platforms, as well as affordable housing and transportation.
Although Wells’ announcement that he’s not running for the At-Large seat comes on the same day of Silverman’s announcement, Wells has not made any endorsements yet.
