As part of a campaign to remind motorists and their passengers not to be idiots, police will be “stepping up” seat belt enforcement between now and June 1.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer vacation season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy L. Lanier said in a release. “If you are not wearing your seat belt, you will be ticketed.”

Not wearing a seat belt in D.C. comes with a $50 ticket and a two-point license penalty, with an increased fine for not properly securing a child.

This summer mobilization is part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign. “Law enforcement agencies across the nation will conduct intensive, high-visibility enforcement of seat belt laws during daytime and nighttime hours,” a release from the CDC says. “Nighttime enforcement of seat belt laws is encouraged because seat belt use is lower at night. Campaign activities in 2014 will focus primarily on men aged 18-34 years, who research has shown are less likely to wear seat belts.”

A 2012 National Occupant Protection Use survey revealed the observed seat belt rate, found by “observing traffic on roads at selected sites,” was over 92 percent in D.C.

“We are determined to help bring the number of traffic deaths down,” Lanier said. “Many traffic deaths could be prevented if people took the simple step of wearing their seat belt. We will be handing out tickets year-round to those who still haven’t gotten the message.”
