A man was severely injured after being on fire in Northeast D.C. earlier this morning.

Tim Wilson, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS, says that they received a report of a man on fire in the 3400 block of Benning Road NE, near a Pepco power plant at approximately 10:24 a.m. Upon arrival, Wilson says the man was already extinguished, and he was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in serious condition.

At this time, fire officials don’t know whether the man was set on fire or accidentally caught on fire, but authorities are currently investigating the incident. Witnesses told WTOP the man was trying to light a cigarette.
