UK indie-pop band Fear of Men started as a school project. But after the release of the band’s first full-length, Loom, this past April, the group became a full-fledged group. Formed by Jessica Weiss and Daniel Falvey, the duo spent time making singles and EPs which were all collected last year on the Loom teaser, Early Fragments. The band builds on the earlier material by adding more instruments and pomp to the tracks. Loom shares the orchestral touches of Camera Obscura, turing each song into a mini-symphony. The lyrics are heartbreaking, mostly dealing with loss and mortality, giving them a universal quality. “America,” starts with a capella but then blends Weiss’s voice with intricate instrumentation.
“America’s” hook is one of the strongest on the record and is an instant ear-worm.
Fear of Men play with Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Ablebody tomorrow night at Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $12 adv $14 doors.
