Planet Money crunched some new Commerce Department data to find out how far income actually stretches in metropolitan areas across America. With cost of living, D.C.’s decline is the biggest in the country — from a median income of $44,452 to what feels like $34,907.
Moving to Baltimore wouldn’t make your life much better: The $39,866 median income only feels like $34,606. Moving to Richmond would be even worse: $32,108 feels like $31,602. Philadelphia? The worst: From $35,563 to $30,591.
So where should you move? Rochester, Minn., where $35,563 feels like $36,279.
