Local NPR affiliate WAMU is getting a new General Manager. Beginning August 1, J.J. Yore will take over as General Manager, filling the role of Caryn Mathes, who left the position at the beginning of the year to take over as general manager of KUOW as well as the President of Puget Sound Public Radio in Seattle.
According to a release, Yore was the co-creator—as well as a producer and editor—of the popular business and economics radio program Marketplace. He became the general manager of the Marketplace portfolio, which includes Marketplace Morning Report and Marketplace Money.Yore also has experience working with a number of of public radio stations, newspapers, and news shows, but has been working as a public media consultant most recently.
“We are pleased to have J.J.’s programming creativity, broadcasting knowledge and ability to attract top talent to help WAMU continue its trajectory of impressive success,” David Taylor, Chief of Staff of the American University President (who WAMU reports to), said in a release. “The past decade has been one of tremendous achievement for WAMU, and now operating from its new broadcast center, we are excited about our future potential.”
Last year, WAMU relocated from the American University campus to its new home in Van Ness. “WAMU is a great media organization in the most powerful city in the world,” Yore said. “I’m delighted to be coming home to Washington to work with a talented staff that is poised to reach new levels of impact at a time when the kind of thoughtful, civil discourse represented by Diane Rehm, Kojo Nnamdi and the WAMU news team is more important than ever.”
