When D.C. three-piece Trans Am started releasing records in 1996, they were the embodiment of the future. Now ten albums in, Trans Am continues to make incredible records for Thrill Jockey Records. This year’s X comes on the heels of the band’s tenth anniversary tour for Futureworld. It’s Trans Am’s first record since 2010’s The Thing. With looking back behind them, Trans Am continues on the path of making hard-crushing music with robotic vocals and huge riffs. “I’ll Never” is a robotic love song on X, but as the alternate versions reveals, it is a straight to the heart indie-pop track. Speeding up the tempo and filling in the guitar fuzz, “I’ll Never” sounds like a prime Jesus and Mary Chain track.
Trans Am play with Heavy Breathing tomorrow night at The Black Cat. Tickets are $12 .
