The theft of bikes and cell phones, two of the biggest security issues on Metro last year, were down significantly in the first quarter of 2014.

A security report prepared for WMATA’s board says the snatching of electronic devices was down 42 percent between January and March of this year compared to last year. Bike thefts is down 56 percent, while there’s been a 55 percent reduction in robberies.

“Last year, the Metro Transit Police Department performed extensive analysis of departmental organization, deployment of resources, strategies, crime patterns, and geographical patrol areas,” the report states. “Since then, incremental efforts have been introduced to improve our crime reduction performance.”

Metro credits the reduction, in part, to bike lock give-aways, an online bike registry, and uniformed crime suppression teams.

Not down, however, are sexual harassment complaints filed online. Ten sexual harassment complaints were classified as criminal between January and March this year, the same as last year.
