Leaving at rush hour Friday = very bad.

Leaving at rush hour Friday = very bad.

If you are traveling to or through Virginia this Memorial Day weekend, and your travel times are flexible, perhaps you should consult this interactive map, which shows where and when congestion is historical the worst.

The Virginia Department of Transportation looked at congestion patterns during the 2011 to 2013 Memorial Day weekends. The results likely won’t surprise you. Leaving D.C. around rush hour Friday? A bad idea!

While the Maryland Department of Transportation does not have a similar map, they do recommend times to travel the Bay Bridge:

Thursday – before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
Friday – before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
Saturday – before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
Sunday – before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
Memorial Day Monday – before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.

More than 1.7 million motorists are expected to travel Maryland roadways this weekend.
