Seeing GWAR—the legendary metal band comprised of grotesque space aliens—live is quite the, uh, experience, but if you’ve ever thought “man, I really wish my dining options were more like a GWAR show,” well then, today is your lucky day. The band is currently raising funds to pay for the start-up cost of a GWAR-themed restaurant in Richmond, Va.
According to the band’s IndieGoGo page set up for the endeavor, the restaurant, which will be called the GWARbar, “will be a fun, unique restaurant in Richmond that will change the dinning experience in much the same way that GWAR changed the concert going experience (well, maybe without quite as much mess).”
Last March, GWAR’s front-being, Oderus Urungus (known as Dave Brockie in his human form), tragically left this earthly plane after 50 years. The band says that one of Brockie’s dreams was to open the GWARbar and now they’re looking to make that dream a reality. Michael Derks (the band’s guitarist, BalSac the Jaws ‘o Death) will be using his “30-plus years of restaurant experience to create a menu and cocktail program unlike any other in Richmond,” and the band is partnering up with restauranteur Travis Croxton to help flesh out other parts of the restaurant.
Currently, the band is looking to raise $50,000 for the start-up funds to help fix up the location, renovate the kitchen, and purchase necessary equipment. And what kind of food will that equipment make, you ask? “Derks’ vision of “gourmet junk food,” the band says. “We need a GWAR sized meat grinder to make creative new takes on hot dogs and freshly ground hamburgers.” I guess their Bloody Pit of Horror isn’t big enough.
