A painting of Maya Angelou, unveiled in April, will be installed at the National Portrait Gallery tomorrow.
The portrait of the late poet, painted by Ross Rossin, will be on view through June 12 in the first-floor gallery. At the unveiling in April, Angelou told the audience, “I know that when you have love, you have patience with people who make mistakes. So it is important to first love yourself.”
In a statement, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said her friend “needed every one of her 86 years to live her rich life as a renaissance woman – writer, poet, actor, dancer, screenwriter, professor, civil rights activist, and on top of all that talent, Maya also was a cook extraordinaire.”
“Maya came to the District often and touched the hearts of our residents, who named a charter school for her,” she continued.
