Yards Park on MTV!!!

A D.C. man who claimed to be a hip-hop producer was featured on MTV’s Catfish, a show that attempts to catch lying liars in a lie.

As with every episode of this show, it’s a long story. But here’s the short of it: Jerez S. Coleman allegedly scammed people into thinking he’s a well-connected producer with (fake) Kanye West ties called Kidd Cole, as well a manager with a “slight British accent” named Miguel. An unsuspecting victim from Philadelphia set up concerts for Kidd Cole and couldn’t pay for the hired limos, security teams and other expensive things.

The episode concludes, as most do, with a confrontation (this time at Yards Park!) where the accused denies any wrongdoing. Coleman’s phone is thrown in the Anacostia (not Potomac, MTV) River by host Nev, but that’s about as exciting as it gets.

But it goes much deeper. According to the Richmond-Times Dispatch, Coleman had been charged with scamming Virginia Commonwealth University into thinking he had booked Big Sean.

Caitlin R. Kelly, the prosecutor, said Coleman portrayed himself as a well-connected executive producer in the hip hop world and went to elaborate lengths when he contacted VCU to set up a Dec. 10 event at which Big Sean would speak with students. The university, Kelly said, was understandably receptive to an engagement featuring Big Sean because the artist had already performed at VCU, appearing in February 2012 as part of homecoming festivities.

Kelly said Coleman arranged to have a limousine transport him to the Dec. 10 event, which was free but for which VCU students needed to first obtain tickets.

Coleman went into the auditorium and spoke with the students for several minutes using a fake British accent, passing himself off as a British producer. At that point, the VCU students were told that Big Sean had another engagement elsewhere and would not be coming to speak with them, Kelly said.

Coleman was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation earlier this month. Watch the episode here.
