Looks like the controversy surrounding the Washington football team’s racist name has rattled the organization enough that they’ve hired a lobbying firm to defend it to members of Congress.
Roll Call reports that the team has contracted K Street lobbying firm McGuireWoods Consulting to lobby “on discussions of team origins, history and traditions, Washington [football team] Charitable Foundation and youth sports, activities of Original Americans’ Foundation.”
Recently, the team has received a lot of pressure from various politicians and organizations to change their name. 50 U.S. Senators signed a letter to the NFL urging them to pressure owner Dan Snyder to change the team’s name. Numerous Native American and human rights organizations sent letters to every NFL player, urging them to support changing the team’s name. That’s just a small sampling of the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week Snyder had a couple weeks ago.
According to Roll Call, the team’s lobbyists “include Frank Donatelli, former Rep. L.F. Payne, D-Va., Russ Sullivan (former staff director of the Senate Finance Committee), and Ron Platt.” A better lineup than Snyder’s all-star team of legal advisors, at least.
