Councilmember Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7), who chairs the Committee on Health, will hold a public hearing this month regarding an amendment to the District’s Mental Health Service Delivery Reform Act of 2001 that would ban sexual orientation conversion therapy for minors.

The amendment, which was introduced by Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) last month would ban the practice of sexual orientation therapy—sometimes known as gay conversion therapy or “reorientation” therapy— for minors. As of now, only California and New Jersey have passed similar laws. Meanwhile, Texas has embraced conversion therapy as part of their “official state party platform,” the Post reports, because of course they have.

In a statement, Cheh said that “many children who have participated in conversion therapy suffer from increased risk for suicide, depression, anxiety, shame and self-hatred. By adopting this legislation, we will send a strong message that the District does not believe our LGBT children are sick.”

The public hearing, which was originally scheduled for today, will now take place on Friday, June 27 at 12 p.m. in Room 500 of the Wilson Building. Anyone wishing to testify should email rsmith@dccouncil.us with their contact information.
