After Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, along with 50 other U.S. Senators, signed a letter sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell—urging him to take action against the Washington football team’s name—team President Bruce Allen sent a letter to Reid, inviting him to attend a home game this season.
But don’t expect to see Reid at any games in the near future. In a letter sent back to Allen (seriously, why can’t these guys just pick up the phone and call each other? Oh, that’s right, “making a statement.”), Reid respectfully declined the invitation, saying that he’ll never attend a Washington home game until the team’s name is changed.
“I will not stand idly by while a professional sports team promotes a racial slur as a team name and disparage the American people,” Reid writes. “Nor will I consider your invitation to attend a home game until your organization chooses to do the right thing and change its offensive name.”
In Allen’s letter to Reid, which was sent last month, he invited him to come to a game and witness how the team and its fans respect and “honor the proud legacy and traditions of Native Americans.”
