“Now that is some good rock ‘n roll!” outgoing White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said as he took the podium for his last press briefing, while the song “Motor Away” by his favorite band Guided By Voices played.
The 49-year-old announced last month that he’d be stepping down from his position, to spend more time with his family. He’ll be replaced by deputy spokesman Josh Earnest.
Over the years, Carney’s love of legendary indie-rock band band Guided By Voices hasn’t been too much of a secret. He once accidentally called Senator Mitch McConnell “Mitch Mitchell,” GBV’s longtime guitarist; and he once called the band’s hometown, Dayton, Ohio, as the “home of the Wright brothers, the Dayton Peace Accords and Guided by Voices, the greatest rock-and-roll band in the modern era.” Last month, when the band played the Black Cat, Carney introduced the band to a sold-out crowd.
At today’s press briefing, he told reporters that he has “loved every minute of every day [of this job] … even the minutes in this room,” the New York Post reports, and thanked President Barack Obama for “taking a chance” on him.
When Carney announced that he was stepping down, Obama said that he was “one of [his] closest friends…a great press secretary and a great advisor.”
Motor away, Jay. Motor away.
