While public reaction is mixed at best, Mayor Vincent Gray said he’s “very excited” about the prospect of bringing the 2024 summer Olympics to D.C.

The United States Olympic Committee announced last week that D.C. is a final candidate being considered for the U.S. bid, as are Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

At his press briefing today, Gray said the majority of the work has been done by DC2024, the city’s exploratory committee headed by businessman Russ Ramsey and Monumental Sports & Entertainment head Ted Leonsis.

“We’ve supported it. The things that they’ve asked us to do, we’ve stepped up and done those things,” the mayor said. “We were very happy … that the District has been named a finalist.”

Thus far, Gray said the city has been asked to “indicate our support for their pursuit.”

“If this gets past the stage of where it is now, the city will obviously have to participate in the transportation issues that will be associated with this, the housing issues,” Gray said. “The idea is, and we’ve had these discussions with them, is to make sure that what is done has an enduring quality. … The transportation infrastructure would have value for the city in the future. The housing infrastructure would have value for the city in the future.”

There’s been no dollar amount discussed at this point, Gray said.
