D.C.’s police union has launched a website that features an interactive crime map and alerts.

The Metropolitan Police Department already provides a crime map with information dating back to 2011. The major difference in the D.C. Police Union’s map is an ability to navigate the entire city through one search, as well as the use of symbols and Google street view. While MPD’s site shows the year-to-date change in the number of crimes reported, the union’s site graphs this information.

The site also offers “a weekly crime-activity email service specific to individual neighborhoods,” “a daily city-wide crime clips email service” and safety tips from individual officers. MPD offers an alert system, as well.

“The DC Police Union is dedicated to protecting Washington’s police officers and residents — this new service is our latest effort to fight crime and improve the quality of life in our nation’s capital,” D.C. Police Union Chairman Delroy Burton said in a release. “CrimeDC.com will provide residents with a new public service, as well as illustrate that it’s necessary for the new mayor and City Council to act on the increasing crime rates in our city.”
