To celebrate the National Zoo’s 125th anniversary, Metro has unveiled four limited-edition commemorative National Zoo SmarTrip Cards.
Yes, now you can own a Bao Bao SmarTrip Card to add to your Bao Bao collection. The other three cards include pictures of Sumatran tiger cubs Bandar and Sukacita, African lion cubs, and Rona, one of the Zoo’s gray seal pups.
Like every other SmarTrip Card, these are $10 and come pre-loaded with $8 of Metro fare on it. You can buy them online here, or at any SmarTrip dispensers located in various stations, beginning July 4. On July 4, Metro staff will also be selling the cards in person at these stations: Shady Grove, Greenbelt, Largo Town Center, New Carrollton, Branch Avenue, Franconia-Springfield, Vienna and Pentagon City. In addition to the basic functions a SmarTrip card provides (like, getting you on and off Metro trains) the cards can be used at the National Zoo’s gift shop’s for 10 percent off purchases.
“We are delighted to promote taking bus and rail transit to this popular destination,” Metro Assistant General Manager for Customer Service, Communications and Marketing Lynn Bowersox said in a statement. “The National Zoo is convenient for Metro riders and we are excited to feature a few of its newest inhabitants as the Zoo celebrates 125 years.”
