Two men were indicted today on charges related to a series of bottle bomb incidents at local movie theaters.

Manuel Joyner-Bell, 20, and co-defendant, Michael Hollingsworth, 23, were indicted on “possession of a destructive device, six counts of second degree assault, reckless endangerment and conspiracy to use a destructive device.” Both men are being held without bond. From the Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County:

Joyner-Bell was arrested in late May and charged with one count of detonation of a destructive device in relation to a bottle bomb explosion at the Magic Johnson Theater in Largo on May 24, 2014. Hollingsworth was arrested a few days later and was allegedly driving the vehicle that Joyner-Bell fled in after the detonation of the bottle bomb. Hollingsworth is currently facing charges in Virginia for similar incidents at movie theaters there.

Police say Joyner-Bell admitted to setting off the bottle bombs created “by mixing acid and metal in Mountain Dew and Lipton Brisk bottles” at six theaters in Virginia and Maryland, the Post reported.

Joyner-Bell’s attorney, Warren Price, said his client, a high school graduate with a full-time job, is “presumed innocent.” But he also said authorities are overstating the seriousness of the incidents.

“Whoever is guilty of these charges was committing a high school prank,” Price said. “This seems like election year overcharging. This is more akin to someone placing a cherry bomb in a mailbox than a terrorist-level attack.”

He faces more than 25 years in prison if convicted.
