Rusty, the National Zoo red panda who famously escaped from his enclosure and ran away into our hearts, is a father. Mazel Tov, Rusty!
Last Thursday, Rusty and his partner, Shama, became parents to three red panda cubs. They are the fourth pair of red pandas at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va. to produce cubs this year. The Zoo says that 10 cubs were born at the SCBI this year, though only seven have survived.
For those keeping track at home, two cubs were born on May 27 to female Yanhua and male Sherman, and two more were born on June 16 to female Regan and male Rocco, though one was stillborn. The other is “currently in critical condition and receiving round-the-clock care.”
The survival rate for red panda cubs born in captivity, the Zoo says, is about 50 percent. Luckily, keepers at the Zoo are closely observing the cubs and say they “appear healthy.”
Rusty and Shama were moved to Virginia in January, not because of Rusty’s escape, but because Bao Bao’s visitors were getting in the way of their breeding.
Guess it’s time for Rusty to grow up and say goodbye to his life as an escape artist and get a real job. I’d say he should move his family out to the suburbs, but it looks like he’s already done that.
