A D.C. man was sentenced to 21 years in prison today for sexually assaulting one woman and attempting to kidnap three others.

Gerald Canty, 21, pleaded guilty in May to one count of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of attempted kidnapping while armed and two counts of attempted kidnapping. This includes the sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in March near the Minnesota Avenue Metro station and kidnapping attempts against three women, aged 17, 19 and 25. Those three, one of whom was identified as a victim after Canty was arrested, managed to escape. In each case, Canty told the women he had a gun.

Three victims provided descriptions of Canty, and in March, a “Minnesota Avenue Metro station manager contacted Metro Transit Police to report that an individual matching the descriptions had been seen on the footbridge of the Minnesota Avenue Metro station.” He was interviewed and admitted to the sexual assault and two kidnappings. The 18-year-old woman’s rape kit was used to make a positive DNA match.
