Nobody loves Christopher Walken as much as the motley crew at the Christopher Walken Club. But when the group has a chance to compete in a Christopher Walken beauty pageant, the pressure threatens to tear the club apart. If this sounds totally absurd, it is — but in a great way. Walken in His Shoes is genuinely ridiculous, an adjective it embraces wholeheartedly.

Walken in His Shoes follows a quintet of socially awkward weirdos as they engage in a variety of hilarious tributes to their favorite actor. These activities include: practicing their best “Walken-ese” (the particularly stilted manner of Walken-speech); debating which films would have been better had they starred Walken (with scenes re-enacted in Walken-ese); and attempting to erect a statute to the man himself in downtown Tucson.

The show hinges on the cast’s ability to do a strong Christopher Walken impression, and each of them delivers. The cast members all appear to be related to one another, so perhaps Walken runs in their blood. The play also relies on a series of videotaped sketches, including some pretty funny interviews of Tucsonans discussing the merits of erecting a Walken statue next to the city’s bronze likeness of Pancho Villa.

The play spares no opportunity to make a joke, including going for some pretty low-hanging fruit. But the cast is so exuberant that it’s hard not to forgive them for even the cringe-worthy puns. They also do an impressive number in the talent portion of the pageant, from Walken-esque tap dancing (the man is a formidable dancer) to an ’80s power ballad about the actor’s universal appeal. Despite being a little corny at times, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that make Walken in His Shoes a fun, Fringe-y time. Verdict: Worth your $17 dollars.
