There are two types of people in this world: people who think a flash mob picnic dinner where everyone dresses in all white is “fun,” and people who think it is insanely dumb.
If you fall in the former camp, well, you’re in luck because the Dîner en Blanc is happening on September 4, a release states. What is the Dîner en Blanc, you ask? Heh, well, please, sit back and let me enlighten you:
The Dîner en Blanc is a self-described worldwide epicurean phenomenon started 25 years ago wherein people engage in a kind of flash mob picnic dinner at a secret location. The location is given to those who register hours before it’s set to begin and participants are expected to dress in all white, and “[conduct] themselves with the greatest decorum, elegance, and etiquette” for what’s described as a mass “chic picnic” in a public space.
“We felt Washington, D.C. was primed for such a fantastic event as an increase of interest in all things epicurean has been noted over the years,” Linda Davis, co-organizer of the event says in a release. “Not to mention Washingtonians are known for their love of all things festive and stylish”, Co-Host Bryer Davis also says.
Are their rules, you ask? Oh yes, there are rules. Via press release:
Key rules of the event:
- Dîner en Blanc is unique due to its requirements. The seating layout on the public site is very specific and the site chosen is in one of the most beautiful parts of the city, where diners can “see and be seen.”
- To participate, guests must be invited by a member from the previous year or get on the official website’s waiting list.
- Once confirmed, each guest’s participation becomes mandatory, regardless of weather conditions, as the event goes ahead rain or shine.
- Color of attire and table setting: WHITE ONLY!
- Participants arrive and depart by organized meeting locations and instructions.
- Guests leave with their belongings, leftovers and litter, leaving the secret location as clean as it was when they arrived.
Guests must bring:
- A table, two (white) chairs.
- A picnic basket – Gourmet picnic dinners available for purchase at time of registration. Proper stemware, flatware, and china required.
- Wine or champagne – Selection of wine available for purchase at the time of registration. Beer and hard liquor prohibited.
- Participants and media must be dressed elegantly in white.
- Stylish and tasteful originality is encouraged!
Organizers say they’re expecting “over 1,200 foodies and cultural enthusiasts dressed in white” to partake in the D.C. Dîner en Blanc, which will be at a secret location. Although, outdoor spaces that can hold 1,200 people in D.C. are few and far between, so it probably wouldn’t be hard to figure out where.
Registration is now open and free, if this sounds like you’re sort of thing. If not, well, God have mercy on us all.
