No, marijuana is not legal in D.C. nor are there any plans for it to be legalized. Though there is an initiative to legalize marijuana that is likely to be on the November general election ballot, the marijuana law the D.C. Council passed and Mayor Vince Gray signed into law, which is set to go into effect tomorrow, decriminalizes the possession of small amounts of pot. It does not legalize it, the Metropolitan Police Department would like to remind you.
As such, the Post reports that MPD has released these wallet-sized (and, perhaps coincidentally—or perhaps not!—rolling paper-sized) cards to remind D.C. citizens about D.C.’s marijuana decriminalization law:
Like the card says, the possession of an ounce or less of pot will only land you a $25 fine, but you’ll still be arrested if you “smoke or consume marijuana in public, have more than one ounce, or sell any amount of marijuana.”
Here, print some out and pass the facts ‘pon the left hand side.
