A House of Representatives staffer was arrested this morning for bringing a gun into the Cannon House Office Building.
According to a U.S. Capitol police public information Officer, Ryan Shucard—a press secretary for Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.)—was arrested at about 9:15 a.m. after officers found a 9mm Smith & Wesson firearm and magazine on Shucard during a routine security search.
The PIO says Shucard has been charged with a felony for carrying a pistol without a licenses and is currently being processed at USCP headquarters. The Post reports that Shucard “has been placed on unpaid administrative leave indefinitely,” and that “the office is cooperating with law enforcement.”
Bill Tighe, Rep. Marino’s chief of staff, tells the Post that USPC says “Shucard appears to have accidentally brought the weapon with him to work and had no malicious intent.”
Correction: Due to a reporting error, this post originally said Shucard brought a gun into the Capitol building. It was a House of Representatives office building, the Cannon House Office Building.
