D.C. has been ruined by liberalism and should be put back in the hands of Congress.
At least that’s the opinion of one person, who wanted to let D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton know. While Norton was on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on Friday, Roll Call reports a caller who identified herself as “Donna,” from Oklahoma, called in to tell Norton that, when her family took a vacation to the Nation’s Capital five years ago, they were “appalled” at how liberalism has ruined the city.
“The world comes to Washington, D.C., and we were embarrassed, just totally embarrassed, at what liberalism has done to Washington, D.C., and it’s only a very small place — it should be put back into the hands of Congress to manage,” she said.
Here’s all the things that “Donna” said she was appalled and embarrassed by in D.C.:
- “No Taxation Without Representation” license plates.
- Liberalism.
- Alcoholics.
- People sleeping on the streets.
- Not being able to find a park bench to sit on.
- Blankets issued to homeless people so that they’re not freezing at night (specifically the ones outside her hotel).
- Liberalism.
- “Hordes of black people” at the Court House.
- Liberalism.
In response, Norton kept a cool head and explained to her how homelessness is a huge problem in the country, of which there is no easy solution, as well as how D.C.’s population is half black and has always been a historically black city. In the end, Norton told her she was sorry “Donna” didn’t get to see a “greater part of Washington, D.C.” and invited her back to visit another time.
While “Donna” may be wrong and misguided about a lot of what she said to Norton on C-SPAN, she wasn’t wrong about D.C.’s liberalism. According to a recent report on conservatism is America—from Chris Warshaw of MIT and Chris Tausanovitch from the University of California at Los Angeles—which The Economist posted earlier today, D.C. is actually the second most liberal city in the country, right behind San Francisco.
