The annual National Night Out is this evening and the Metropolitan Police Department, along with police departments throughout the county, will be participating with a series of events scheduled in each district of the city.

The event, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, takes place the first Tuesday of August annually. It’s a campaign aimed at raising awareness for heightened crime and drug prevention, and to “strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships,” through a series of MPD-sponsored events throughout the city.

This year, MPD has a whole host of events happening throughout the city this evening, with a city-wide kickoff event at Woodson High School (540 55th Street NW) in the Sixth District.
