Update: 5,674 people (!) voted and decided that the next Romo will be Gigi! Gigi— two-year-old Great Dane—lives only a few blocks away from Romo, on the corner of 20th and Kalorama Road NW, and likes to frequent the second-floor balcony of her hone, sticking her head over the railing to watch people pass by. If see her, say “hi!”

Congratulations Gigi and remember to make Romo proud.

Last week, DCist reported the bummer news that Romo—the beloved 150-pound bull mastiff/pit bull mix who hangs out the window of his Adams Morgan home, making him a neighborhood icon—is heading for greener pastures (the suburbs).

While we, like most Adams Morgan and D.C. residents who happened upon Romo, were bummed to hear the news, it got us thinking: who will be the dog to take over his throne as the “King of Adams Morgan?” Or maybe not even Adams Morgan, but the “King of [insert neighborhood here]’?

So, we did the only thing that we could think of to answer such a question: hold a contest! We received dozens of entries of dogs (and one cat)—all of them adorable—to be the next Romo, but in the end, we whittled it down to five. Meet your candidates for #NewRomo:

Ana

Ana is a 90-pound, pure white husky who hangs out constantly in her front yard near Kingman Park/H Street NE. According to her owners, “not a day goes by when we don’t get stopped at least once on a walk to be asked or told:

  • Is that the dog from the yard?
  • Is that the dog on the corner?
  • I thought she was a statue the first time I saw her sitting in your yard!
  • I love your dog! She’s always so calm when I walk by your house.
  • Is that a wolf?
  • Did you ever think about breeding her?”

Franklin

And here’s Franklin, a four-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei who just moved into his new home in LeDroit Park in March. According to his owners, his “favorite nice-weather activity is to sit in front of the open door and watch people pass by.”

Schroeder

The only entry to receive multiple nominations not from their owner, Schroeder is Labradoodle who hangs out in the front window of the Cheeky Puppy in Dupont Circle, constantly keeping an eye out on Connecticut Avenue.

Gigi

According to Gigi’s owners, the two-year-old Great Dane already occupies the throne as “Queen of Adams Morgan.” She lives only a few blocks away from Romo, on the corner of 20th and Kalorama Road NW, and she “likes to keep a close eye on [passers-by] from her second floor balcony.” Like Romo, she hangs above the railing peering down at everyone who walks by. Bonus: she’s already on a first name basis of many of her neighbors, who walk by, look up, and just say “hey, Gigi!”

Olive

Olive, a two-and-half-year old Maltese/Dachsund mix is a people-watching lover. According to her owner, she loves to peer out her Capitol Hill living room window, and is “often admired by [passers-by] ” while doing so.

So, who will it be? Vote below, and we’ll announce the winner at the end of the week.
