This weekend, D.C. will host a worldwide championship that brings together competitors from more than 30 countries. No, it’s not the World Cup again, but it is a championship on the level of the World Cup, if you happen to be into Pokémon.
That’s right, this weekend the 2014 Pokémon World Championships will be held at the Washington Convention Center. If you’re into that sort of thing, the championship, which features “500 elite Pokémon competitors,” is free for the public to attend, and “will be highlighted by Pokémon cosplay, costumed character appearances, hundreds of competitors packing the convention center, and awesome opening and closing ceremonies” The whole thing kicks off Friday at 8 a.m. when registration for competitors opens, but the championships don’t start until 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Man, when did D.C. become such a nerd destination?
