Photo by Slant 6.While news of Dischord Records reissuing selections from their old catalogue isn’t really surprising or newsworthy these days (unless it’s never-before-released Fugazi songs!)—that’s been their M.O. for a few years now—one such reissue has us more excited than usual.
Earlier this week, Dischord announced they’ll be re-issuing the debut LP of seminal early ’90s punk trio Slant 6, Soda Pop*Rip Off. The record, which “has been out of print for nearly two decades” was originally released in 1993 and has since joined the ranks, at least in this writer’s opinion, of such seminal records by D.C. bands like The Dismemberment Plan’s Emergency & I, Unrest’s Perfect Teeth, Fugazi’s In On The Kill Taker, Q and Not U’s No Kill No Beep Beep, and numerous others.
The band, which consisted of Christina Billotte, Myra Power, and Marge Marshall, broke up in the fall of 1995 after their second LP, Inzombia, was released. Though the band was short-lived, they left an imprint on the D.C. scene, as most recently evidenced by Ex Hex covering their most famous single from Soda Pop*Rip Off, “What Kind of Monster Are You?” Perhaps a reunion will follow this reissue? Please?
The record has been remastered by TJ Lipple and will be pressed to red-colored vinyl, and be released on October 14. Pre-orders will begin mid-September, which you will be able to find here.
