Via MPD.D.C. police saw a reduction in robberies and an increase in sexual assaults last year, according to an annual report.
There was a five percent reduction in robberies citywide in 2013, according to the Metropolitan Police Department, with a 27 percent reduction in the Second District and a 20 percent increase in the Sixth. Reports of sexual assault, defined by the D.C. Code and only including “first and second degree offenses and attempts with adult victims,” increased by 15 percent citywide. In the Seventh District, which primarily covers Ward 8, reports of sexual assault increased by 41 percent last year.
Under the FBI’s definition, which changed in 2013, reports of forcible rape increased by 61 percent in D.C. between 2012 and 2013. That’s after a 37 percent increase between 2011 and 2012.

The report notes that the city’s 104 homicides in 2013 includes the 12 people killed during the Navy Yard rampage in September. “Scores of MPD members rushed to the scene and entered Building 197, even though they had very limited information about the situation,” MPD Chief Cathy Lanier writes in the report. “I mourn the loss of the 12 individuals who were killed that day and still don’t understand how a single person can choose to cause so much pain and anguish. But I am also incredibly proud of the bravery and selflessness exhibited by so many members of this Department that day. I believe that without the swift response by law enforcement, we would have suffered the deaths of more innocent Navy Yard workers.”
Of D.C.’s 104 homicide victims, 78 percent were black males, 9 percent were black females and 8 percent were white males. The majority of these homicides, 78 percent, were carried out with a firearm, 1,1330 of which were recovered primarily in the Sixth and Seventh districts. Of the firearms recovered in 2013, 82 were traced back to Virginia and 64 to Maryland.
Reflecting the city’s overall growth, calls for service increased by 4.2 percent. Response time on average decreased by 16 seconds.
