The Corcoran may go ahead with its plan to merge with the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University, a D.C. Superior Court judge ruled today.

The National Gallery will get first pick from the 145-year-old museum’s 17,000 piece art collection, while GW will operate the college. The remainder of the collection will be sent to museums around the country. The merger was opposed by the Save the Corcoran coalition, whose members Camila Rondon and Jayme McLellan wrote in a recent Post op-ed, “We cannot lose the Corcoran, as it is one of the country’s first and most vibrant independent museums with a fully integrated school dedicated to art and creativity.”

“The Corcoran as we know it is gone. We fought the good fight,” the group said in a Facebook post today.

The museum will close on October 1.
