A former D.C. tax office worker will serve jail time for using her job to steal thousands of dollars from a retired member of the military.
According to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, 48-year-old Catyondia Ballard used personal information taken from the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue employee to steal $114,166 from the victim’s bank account. The Bowie woman used the money, stolen between March 2007 and April 2010, to pay off her mortgage, according to the government.
Ballard pleaded guilty in May. She will serve 16 weekends in jail, spend 180 days under house arrest and pay full restitution to the victim.
In 2009, Harriette Walters was sentenced to over 17 years in prison for leading a “two-decade-long, $50 million embezzlement scheme run from the inside of the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue.” A report blamed a “culture of apathy and silence” for the long duration of the theft.
