D.C. drivers: No longer the worst!
That’s according to an annual ranking from Allstate that determines the most accident-prone drivers in 200 big cities across America. D.C. has been at the bottom (or top, if you’re into accidents!) of that list for several years.
But now Boston and Worcester, Mass. drivers have taken the crown, with 4.4 and 4.3 years, respectively, between accidents on average. D.C.’s average is now 5.1 years.
So does this mean D.C. drivers are improving? Probably not! As Bloomberg explains:
Massachusetts cities hadn’t been included in Allstate’s report in recent years because the insurer didn’t sell policies there. The company, which sells about 10 percent of U.S. auto policies, began offering the coverage again in Massachusetts in 2009, after exiting the state’s market in 1989. Allstate has conducted the studies for 10 years.
Fort Collins, Colo. and Brownsville, Texas top the list with 14.2 years between crashes in average.
Here’s the methodology, if you’re interested.
For the past ten years, Allstate actuaries have conducted an in-depth analysis of company claims data to determine the likelihood drivers in America’s 200 largest cities will experience a vehicle collision compared to the national average. Internal property damage reported claims were analyzed over a two-year period (from January 2011 to December 2012).
A weighted average of the two-year numbers determines the annual percentages. The report defines an auto crash as any collision resulting in a property damage claim. Allstate’s auto policies represent nearly 10 percent of all U.S. auto policies, making this report a realistic snapshot of what’s happening on America’s roadways.
