After months of courtroom drama, the split of the Corcoran was officially announced a couple of weeks ago. Decades of financial turmoil led the longstanding art museum to be dissolved between the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University.

Although the Corcoran’s galleries will remain open until October 1, this Saturday, there will be a “Farewell Hug” for the gallery. According to a Facebook event, organizers are asking people to “gather together to form one connection by holding hands and having a moment of silence.” The whole thing will go down between 2:30 to 3 p.m., with big “hug” happening, followed by “some ceremonial goodbye rituals.”

Full info below. RSVP on Facebook here, if you want to say goodbye.

Let’s all gather together to form one connection by holding hands and having a moment of silence for Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design. I propose we wrap through around the outside of the building and then in the ny ave entrance and out on E st side. We could also try to go through the gallery doors on 17th. In less than 90 days Corcoran as we know it will change. If you will please join me to celebrate the amazing community that Corcoran College of Art and Design has created and the start of a new era for the institution.

I will be meeting up there around noon to go through the collection again and so you all are all welcome to go on a tour with me. Between 2:30pm – 3pm we will all start to form the hug and once we have enough people to fully link then I will perform some ceremonial goodbye rituals.

If you’d like to give your own farewell eulogy for the Corcoran then let me know.

I’ll be asking participants to write and/or talk about their first and best memories of the Corcoran.

The Corcoran is dead. Long live the Corcoran.
