A feral cat’s reign of terror at a Maryland school ended today, when it was captured in a supply closet.
Kids at Richard Henry Lee Elementary School got an early start to the Labor Day holiday Friday, when the cat forced the closure of the Anne Arundel County school. It promptly went into hiding, as Anne Arundel County Public Schools reported on its Facebook page:
There have been no cat sightings or detection of movement at Richard Henry Lee Elementary School again today. The school will open on time for students and staff tomorrow, September 2. All kindergarten students should report tomorrow as well.
But the cat was finally found in a supply closet this morning by two teachers, who called animal control and moved present students into another room during the capture. From a letter composed by Richard Henry Lee principal Christopher Wooleyhand:
As you know, despite our best efforts over the weekend, we were unable to trap the animal. Detecting no movement, we believed it had left our building. Well before
students arrived this morning, however, two of our second-grade teachers discovered cat
urine and fur in a classroom supply closet. We closed the closet door, notified Animal
Control, and made plans to move students in the classroom adjacent to that closet to
another area of the building when they arrived.Animal Control was able to confine the cat, and took custody of the animal. We have
been told by officials at that agency that they will monitor the cat’s progress and assess
the animal in order to make an appropriate determination on what to do next.
