Contentious, arbitrary ranking time! This edition comes from real estate blog Movoto and it concludes that D.C. is the second snobbiest city in America, right behind San Francisco. Seems we’ve moved up in the rankings since Travel & Leisure magazine published a similar list last year.

“God, that’s so true/utterly wrong!” You might yell emphatically to yourself in agreement/anger. “What factors did Movoto consider in determining such a accurate/completely false list?” You ask. Well, according to Movoto, they started by compiling a list of the 100 largest cities in the country, as determined by the 2010 U.S. Census, and then started listing the determining factors of snobbiness: home price, household income, percent of population with a college degree, private schools per capita, performing arts per capita, art galleries per capita, and fast food restaurants per capita. They crunched the data of those factors in order to define what makes a certain city “snobby” and, well, this list is the result.

So yeah, turns out D.C. isn’t just the second snobbiest city in the country, it’s the snobbiest city on the East Coast, by a lot. The next closest East Coast city is Atlanta, Ga., coming in at the number ten spot. You can see the full results here.

But here’s another possible reason for D.C.’s supposed snobbiness: our eating patterns. According to a report from Fast Company’s Co.Design and a food analytics firm called Food Genius on the Weirdest Eating Patterns of Each U.S. States, D.C. really likes herb, salmon, vinaigrette, lamb, and cake. A lot.

According to their research, they looked through more than 88,000 menus across the country to find patterns, and found that D.C. menus contain those food ingredients more than other states. For example, salmon appears on 56 percent of D.C. menus, while it appears on 38 percent of menus across the country. Herb is 82 percent versus a nationwide average of 64 percent. You can see the full report here.

Anyway, feel free to express enthusiastic agreement/downright outrage with these arbitrary rankings in the comments.
