Via State of Obesity report.The obesity rate ticked up in D.C. between 2012 and 2013, according to an annual report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America looks at the obesity rate in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Compared to states in 2013, D.C. ranked 49 out of 51 for adult obesity, not surprising as its an urban environment. With a rate of 22.9 percent, only Hawaii (21.8 percent) and Colorado (21.3 percent) have a lower rate of adult obesity.
D.C.’s adult obesity rate increased by 1 percent between 2012 and 2013, according to the report. The group most affected by obesity in D.C. in 2013 were people aged 45 to 64, who suffer from obesity at a rate of 31.6 percent. The obesity rate for black D.C. residents was 35.6 percent,18.5 percent for Latino residents and 10 percent for white residents.
Diabetes affected 7.8 percent of D.C. adults as of 2013, and hypertension affected 28.4 percent.
As a recent analysis by the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University showed, 35 percent of children between 10 and 17 are overweight or obese. As of 2011, 13.1 percent of two- to four-year-olds in low-income families were obese.
Adults with a body mass index of 30 or more are considered obese in the report.
