Janay Rice—the wife of former running back Ray Rice, who was fired by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL yesterday—has spoken up in defense of her husband.

Rice’s contract with the Ravens was terminated and he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL yesterday after security camera footage surfaced showing Rice assaulting his then-fiancee in the elevator of an Atlantic City hotel in February, knocking her unconscious. After the incident, the NFL suspended Rice for the first two games of the season, but it took the actual footage of the assault for the team to terminate his contract and for the league to suspend him indefinitely.

The Post reports that, in an Instagram post, Janay Rice defended her husband and blasted the media for yesterday’s coverage of the security camera footage:

I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I’m mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it’s reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass off for all his life just to gain ratings is a horrific [sic]. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don’t you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you’ve succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow &show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!

As some outlets have noted, the security camera footage should not have been released publicly, as it re-victimizes Janay Rice. Rice added in a comment below her Instagram post that she is “hurt beyond words” after yesterday’s events.
