If you live in D.C., chances are you’re one of the rudest drivers in the nation. And Maryland drivers hate you for it.
At least according to the results of a new poll from Insure.com, which found that D.C. drivers are the second rudest in the nation and we’re most hated by Maryland drivers, which is shocking to no one.
According to Insure.com, which surveyed 2,000 drivers to determine this ranking, D.C. drivers are “self-serving.” Though other things were factored into their ranking, such as a Driverside study that ranked D.C. as number one in speeding tickets per capita and having the highest average insurance premiums among the top ten states with rudest drivers. Here’s what Insure.com says about our drivers:
Long-time Los Angeles resident Sam Russell moved to the Washington, D.C., area three years ago to start his own charity, Giving Closet.
He speaks for many when he says, “Driving in D.C. can be compared to the recklessness of our politics: self-serving, abrasive and unsafe.”
It looks like many people are late to their Congressional hearings: The Driverside study ranked Washington, D.C., as No. 1 in speeding tickets per capita. In Allstate’s 2014 “America’s Best Drivers” report, Washington, D.C., could muster a ranking of only 198 out of 200.
Bill Begal, president of his own D.C.-area disaster-restoration firm, wishes he had a nickel for every driver who fails to signal when changing lanes. Another pet peeve is finding that whether you’re doing 25 or 95 mph in the left lane, there will always be someone right behind, itching to blow you off the road. And, he says, “Do not play dumb. Get your headlights fixed so you don’t blind me with you bright lights. The good ol’ low beam is out, so I will use my brights. Arggh!”
Washington, D.C., also has the highest average insurance premiums among the states on the Top 10 “rudest drivers” list. It ranks No. 4 according to Insure.com’s 2014 study of car insurance rates by state.
According to the survey, D.C. drivers’ biggest offenses are talking on a cellphone while driving, tailgating, not switching on turn signals, weaving in and out of lanes, and speeding.
So yeah, that, and some other reasons are why D.C. has the rudest drivers and Maryland drivers hate us. The feeling is mutual, probably.
