Via Amtrak.Amtrak service between D.C. and Philadelphia has been restored after a Norfolk Southern freight train struck a support pole near Aberdeen, Md. early this morning. Continued delays are expected, as trains will be single-tracking through the area.
As of noon, Marc service on the Penn Line north of Edgewood was suspended. Service between D.C. and Baltimore is not affected, according to the Maryland Transit Authority.
In a statement, Norfolk Southern said the train was traveling from Baltimore, Md. “with 71 cars of mixed freight” when it “struck a catenary pole with two wide cars hauling transformers.”
“The two-member train crew immediately brought the train to a stop,” the statement continues. “There were no injuries and no hazardous materials involved. The incident is under investigation. NS understands the inconvenience this incident is causing for passenger rail service, and it’s doing everything it can in coordination with Amtrak to reopen passenger and freight service safely.”
