Just because you’re too busy, lazy or apathetic to bring proper food to work doesn’t mean you’re condemned to Sad Desk Lunch Eternity. Trash the soggy salad and check out these options in DC’s commercial districts.
These meals are already delicious, of course, but we’ve subbed the typical side for something healthy from Food Should Taste Good™. Each snack will complement your meal and save you the shame of consuming a large fry in your cubicle, greasy and alone. All it takes is one substitute like this to help you feel better at the end of a long day.
From their four core varieties—Multigrain, Blue Corn, Sweet Potato and Olive—to other awesomely delicious flavors, Food Should Taste Good celebrates a diversity of flavors and commitment to using real, naturally simple ingredients that deliver quality taste.
DOWNTOWN

Bub’s Italian Hoagie from Bub and Pop’s. What better to brighten up the noon hour than a sandwich as big as your head? This place is famous for basically everything, but Bub’s namesake is a venerable Italian monster: Genoa salami, prosciutto, capicola, pepperoni, provolone, arugula, tomatoes, homemade hoagie relish, mayo, Bub’s vinaigrette, and Pecorino Romano. They make their own insanely crispy potato chips in-house, so do yourself a favor and order up some of those. When it’s an hour later and you’re trudging toward the candy machine, for once just say no. Pick up some unusual (unusually delicious) Chocolate Tortilla Chips instead. Chips with lunch and chips for dessert? You’re an adult now, you can do whatever you want.
FOGGY BOTTOM

The Apache Sweat Lodge from Burger Tap & Shake. Some swear by the Southern Comfort burger here, but the heat will keep you awake better than pimiento cheese. The Apache Sweat Lodge comes topped with fire-roasted green chilies, pepperjack cheese,
smoked onions, and a very special XXX Sauce. It’s an amazing Southwestern combination, so keep it going with some Jalapeno and Cheddar Tortilla Chips. The pain will be worth it.
NOMA

Photo via Pho Junkies on Facebook.
Pho from Pho Junkies. There’s no shortage of pho in DC, and some of the best comes from a food truck. Since pho is really considered a street food in Vietnam—and breakfast or lunch, at that—Pho Junkies couldn’t be more perfect for this occasion. Garnishing the bowl is a deeply personal endeavor that’ll never have a right answer. Sriracha and double jalapenos? No bean sprouts, extra basil? Meatballs, eye of round, or everything? Whatever you do, call out that squeeze of lime (which you totally use, right?) with the tartness of some Lime Tortilla Chips. They’re flavored with nothing but the real thing and a dash of sea salt.
CAPITOL HILL

The Bulgogi Burger at Cafe Kimchi. Yeah, there are two burgers on this list, but this is important. Instead of eating bulgogi the boring way—with a fork, I guess—why not put it on a bun? It’s the way lunches were meant to be eaten. All in all, not a bad addition to the already dense food scene on 8th St. And the obvious match for this burger? These wildly popular Kimchi Tortilla Chips, of course.
BONUS CAPITOL HILL

Pupusas from Tortilla Cafe. Pupusas, those delicious griddled Salvadorian corn cakes, make a perfect lunch. Choose fillings and sides and you have yourself a personalized plate of satisfying, authentic, surprisingly nutritious fare. This place is certainly no secret anymore, but any wait will be well worth it. Add in a handful of Guacamole Tortilla Chips and it’ll be the lunch of your week. The only question left: is it weird to dip guacamole chips in your side of guacamole?
ARLINGTON

Photo via Earl’s.
The Turkey Cranberry from Earl’s Sandwiches. There’s no reason this shouldn’t be a year-round sandwich combo, and Earl’s seems to agree. This homemade relish keeps the cranberries relatively in tact for some textural interest, and the turkey itself is roasted and carved in-house. Now that it’s after Labor Day and Turkey Day nears, watch for the Early Thanksgiving sandwich, a take on the above served open-face with stuffing and gravy. Of course, it’d only be American to follow this up with these incredible Harvest Pumpkin Tortilla Chips. They’re a little sweet, a little salty and very pumpkin pie.
K STREET

Photo via Wicked Waffle.
Grilled Cheese from Wicked Waffle. At this point we’re convinced you could put anything on a waffle and it’d be delicious (and viral) but sometimes it’s all about the basics. There are days when all you want is cheese on griddled starch, and on days like those, Wicked Waffle is there for you. Keep it classic like school lunch with some kettle-cooked Sweet Potato Chips. Maybe, just maybe you should stick some on your sandwich, too.
WEST END

Photo via Greek Deli & Catering.
Anything from Greek Deli & Catering. This place is famous, and for good reason. There’s no wrong choice here and, if you’re lucky, you’ll run into owner Kostas Fostieris and any number of his loyal regulars. Grab a gryo, chopped salad, avgolemono, or the Greek meatballs with all the fixins to go, then round it out with the salty punch of some Olive Tortilla Chips. They’re filled with Kalamata, Green, and Nicoise olives—none of that metallic canned junk.
BETHESDA

Photo via Yelp.
Chicken from Chicken on the Run. One of the ultimate lunches, there’s no denying the power of a classic 1/4 chicken with sides combo. In this case it’s Peruvian charcoal-roasted chicken, and it’s delicious. Get it with rice and beans, yucca fries, fried plantains, maduros—the choice is yours, but don’t buy dessert. Instead, keep your diet a little more in line with some Cinnamon Sugar Pita Puffs. They’re all the best parts of a churro minus all the grease on your keyboard.
PENN QUARTER

Photo via Luke’s Lobster on Instagram.
A Lobster Roll from Luke’s Lobster. What is there to say about lobster rolls that hasn’t already been said? If you feel like treating yourself on an especially nice day, this has to be up there with the best of the best. Chips are a natural pair with a sandwich like this, but keep it by the seaside (at least in your imagination) with some Salt & Vinegar Sweet Potato Chips. They’re kettle cooked for some great texture, and the sweet potatoes provide 150% of your Vitamin A with every serving. Pure magic.
