The three top candidates for D.C. mayor each received high ratings from a local LGBT political group.

Independent candidate for mayor David Catania, who is gay, received a perfect 10 from the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C., as he “submitted a strong questionnaire, and has an extensive record of advancing LGBT issues. Notable among his recent efforts are the JaParker Deoni Jones Birth Certificate Equality Amendment Act and the Senior HIV/AIDS Education and Outreach Program Establishment Act of 2012.” Democratic nominee for mayor Muriel Bowser’s primary rating was increased from 8.5 to 9: “Her co-authorship of the LGBTQ Homeless Reform Amendment Act of 2013 is noted and appreciated.”

Former Councilmember Carol Schwartz, who is also running as an Independent, was scored at 8.5 based on her “strong pro-LGBT record from several decades in and out of public office.” Libertarian candidate Bruce Majors, who is gay, was criticized for his “unusual response to many of questions.”

“His and his party’s ideological distrust of government is at odds with policies and reforms favored by GLAA,” the group wrote. “Consequently, many of his responses were interpreted as non-responsive or negative.”

Of the ten At-Large Council candidates who submitted questionnaires, Independents Courtney R. Snowden (10) Graylan Scott Hagler (9) and Elissa Silverman (8) received the highest ratings. Candidate Calvin Gurley, who was given a rating of 1, “offered confused rants instead of substance, and documented no LGBT-related record,” according to GLAA.
