As arbitrary rankings have shown us time and time and time and time and time again, D.C. is many things. Some of those rankings are accurate, others are, well, arbitrary and dumb. This one is neither here nor there, though entirely accurate: Residents of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia carry some of the highest credit card debt in the county.
The Credit.com blog compiled the top 10 states with the most amount of credit card debt and Virginia, D.C., and Maryland take the second, third, and fourth place, with Alaska in the number one spot. The average balance per credit card in Virginia is $1,817, in D.C. it’s $1,793, and in Maryland it’s $1,750. Alaskans have it worse with a whopping $2,299 average balance per credit card.
Of course, for us Washingtonians, the insane cost of living doesn’t help our mounting credit card debt.
