This Saturday marked the fifth annual D.C. State Fair, a celebration of all things home cooked, canned and grown in the District. The fair is probably best known for its culinary and horticultural contests, which range from best apple pie to funkiest-looking vegetable. This year’s event, held at Old City Farm and Guild (925 Rhode Island Avenue NW), also featured the inaugural Homegrown DC fair, a farmers market selling produce grown in the city’s school and community gardens.

“This city is full of talented people with interesting hobbies,” Amelia Showalter, board president of the D.C. State Fair, said in a press release. “From cooking and canning to agriculture and crafts, we want to give D.C. residents an opportunity to show off their skills—just like at county and state fairs elsewhere in the country.”
