Among the many services that will become subject to sales tax tomorrow, none were as hotly debated as fitness. (Where were the bowling alley defenders? Unclear.)
Ahead of the tax’s implementation, Yoga District, which operates several studios across the city, is holding a “pre-tax class sale.” It’s not so much a “sale” as a notice that prices will go up beginning tomorrow when the 5.75 percent sales tax is applied.
“The new fall season is upon us and so is a new mandatory tax on yoga classes,” Yoga District wrote. “We hope this tax supports a balanced budget in D.C., and we hope our pre-tax sale promotes your balanced yoga practice this fall and beyond.”
Yoga District provided a handy comparison of prices pre- and post-tax, because who has time for math? A single class’s price will increased from $11 to $12, while the price of a one-year unlimited pass will increase from $900 to $1,078.65.
VIDA Fitness is still lamenting the tax, which founder David Von Storch claims is responsible for the canceling of a location on H Street NE.
