WMATA announced recently that there’s going to be extensive work done to the Red Line in the coming years. So much work that part of the Red Line—between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor—is going to be closed for 14 weekends for repair, with at least seven consecutive weekends of closure. Though that won’t happen until 2016, Metro officials say.
Still, it seems as though the Red Line will be regularly undergoing weekend track work for the foreseeable future, so we suggest from here on out probably avoiding it from here on out. Although the Red Line isn’t looking good for riders this weekend, the good news is there’s not much else going on. Take a look, via WMATA:
Red Line
Trains every 12-22 minutes.
Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:
- Between Shady Grove and Glenmont: every 22 minutes.
- Between Grosvenor and NoMa-Gallaudet: every 12 minutes Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m-9 p.m. only.
Work Performed: Rail tie renewal between Twinbrook-Shady Grove & Rhode Island Ave-Fort Totten
Orange Line
Regular weekend service EXCEPT on Saturday at Landover and New Carrollton.
On Saturday, Orange Line trains will operate:
Between Cheverly and Vienna at regular Saturday intervals (every 12 minutes 9 a.m.-9 p.m.).
At Landover and New Carrollton only, trains will arrive and depart every 20-25 minutes between 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
On Sunday, Orange Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals.
Work Performed: Rail tie, fastener, insulator and grout pad renewal between Cheverly and New Carrollton.
Other things you should be aware of:
- Army Ten-Miler: Metro is opening two hours early, at 5 a.m., on Sunday for the Army Ten-Miler.
- Columbus Day: Metro will open at 5 a.m. and close at midnight on Columbus Day on Monday.
