Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe will preside over a same-sex wedding today, just days after these marriages became legal in the state.

McAuliffe will marry 44-year-old Katherine Bradley-Black and 50-year-old Renée Bradley at their Northern Virginia home today, the New York Times reports:

The women, both education administrators whom Mr. McAuliffe met through a mutual friend, have been together for 18 years and have two children, ages 12 and 8. They are among the scores of couples who have snapped up marriages certificates since Monday, when the Supreme Court let stand appellate court rulings allowing same-sex marriage in five states.

“I am honored to be a part of this important occasion as Virginia legally recognizes the partnership between two people who are committed to sharing their lives together,” Mr. McAuliffe said in an email. “The guiding principle of my administration has been to create a commonwealth that is open and welcoming to anyone who wants to live, work, and raise a family here. I am pleased that marriage equality has now been extended to all Virginians.”

The Supreme Court earlier this week denied Virginia’s request to have the state’s same-sex marriage case reviewed, opening the door to same-sex marriages. McAuliffe signed an executive order, directing state agencies to comply.

“The highest priority of state government should be to guarantee every person’s right to live, learn, work, and do business, regardless of their race, gender, creed or sexual orientation,” he said in the order.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in D.C. since 2010. Mayor Vincent Gray married two grooms at the Wilson Building last year.
