Although Saint Pepsi originally started as a way to experiment with sample-based music, DeRobertis has evolved his repertoire to include elements of nu-disco, glitch, trip-hop, and French house. Feedel Band @ The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. 6 p.m., free.
Feedel Band, a local D.C. group, plays a fusion of Ethiopian and jazz music. The band’s name, “feedel,” is the Amharic word for alphabet, which aptly underscores their vision of creating a new musical language using those two distinct styles. Their melodies include traditional east African tonalities, while the undercurrent is pure modern jazz. For a taste test, go to the band’s web site. Millennium Stage shows tends to fill up quickly, so try to get there a little early. —Caroline Baxter

FRIDAY
Joy Buttons, Loud Boyz, The Kickback, The Black Sparks, Pinkwash @ Paperhaus. 7:30 p.m. $5-$7 donation.
The first thing you need to know about Joy Buttons is that they loud punk music. But not just straight ahead punk. Brandon Moses delivers mammoth vocals in front of an energetic cast of local musical standouts, and the product is a cathartic brand of sound that is as earnest as it is honest. No tricks here, just solar force rock. Coming on the heels of a blistering show at the D.C. Punk Archives inauguration at the MLK Memorial Library, Joy Buttons drops their second EP, Other, on Friday night at the Paperhaus (4912 3rd Street NW). They’ll be joined by Loud Boyz, The Kickback, The Black Sparks, and Pinkwash. — Lang Kanai

SATURDAY
The Effects, More Humans, Lies About @ Comet Ping Pong. 10 p.m. $12.
The Effects have been referred to as a local supergroup, and though there might be some truth to that, it wouldn’t mean shit if the band wasn’t actually great. Luckily, anyone who is seen The Effects live knows they don’t disappoint. Imagine the punk aspects of Devin Ocampo’s previous band, Medications, but under a heavy dose of influence from Kyuss-esque stoner rock. The playing is great, the songs are great, and the performances are extremely engaging. Now that they’re finally—albeit slowly—letting recordings leak out of Ocampo’s studio to the public (this is a single release show for the trio), I have no doubt the word will get out in a bigger way for this band. Openers More Humans and Lies About are also both excellent local bands with a lot of originality, making this a local lineup at Comet Ping Pong (5037 Connecticut Avenue NW) not to be missed. — Alex Tebeleff
